Psycho Chic: Michelle Williams in Shutter Island

For a 1950s' housewife, a complete psychotic breakdown must occur
when wearing a floral dress.

Do you ever feel like a housewife from the '50s? Everything is seemingly alright, your life is fine, you have a nice dress... But for some reason you feel trapped and on the brink of a mental breakdown?

Maybe it's just the fact that you're bored with your uneventful life?

Dolores (Michelle Williams) may have been a tad crazy, but in a strange way, I can relate to her. There's very little satisfaction to be had from a constant, repetitive routine.

It's time to shake things up.

On a side note: Shutter Island (2010) is yet another amazing Martin Scorsese film to exhibit the artistic talent of Sandy Powell. Others include The Wolf of Wall Street and The Aviator. What an amazing duo.

The Icon: Michelle Williams in My Week With Marilyn

Perhaps it's time to start dressing like an icon.

I really need to distance myself from this student-mentality that I've become accustomed to. Graduation is only a few weeks away, thus it is time to face a harsh reality: I may not be able to pull off the same clothes I used to.

Though I'm not even in my mid-twenties yet, I feel like I should start adjusting myself to a new way of thinking about style. Rather than going for mini-skirts and tight jeans, perhaps I should steer towards longer lengths and quality fabrics.

They say that if you want to change your lifestyle, you should simply change the way you live. True, yes, but I think the same goes for your wardrobe. Dress the part, as they say.

My Week With Marilyn (2011) is a very good film, made even better by Michelle Williams's (a.k.a. Marilyn Monroe's) ensembles. This wardrobe is the ideal example for "dressing the part" (not that I'm aspiring to be like Marilyn Monroe. Just aspiring to have her style). It's sexy, elegant, mature and fun.

Now, if only I could find a job in which I could wear sunglasses and white kitten-heels all day. The search begins.

Wicked: The Witches of Oz: The Great and Powerful

Why are witches always so damn stylish?

Seriously. Witches are always well-dressed. I love it.

Anyway. I went to see Oz: The Great and Powerful last night. The movie was not so great, but it looked pretty at least. Especially Theodora, Glinda and Evanora.

Theodora spent most of the film in leather pants/leggings and knee-high boots, with either the white top and crimson coat (as above), or with a black corset and stereotypical pointy-hat. I have to tell you, I loved the Wicked Witch look. I'm thinking it may be a future Halloween inspiration (minus the green face).

Glinda, being the Good Witch, obviously wore white, virginal dresses that looked like bridal gowns. Didn't hate them either. They were cute.

And then there was Evanora. The Wicked Witch of the... East? West? Not sure. Honestly, it doesn't really matter, considering how amazing her dresses were. Very sparkly, very dark, lots of sheerness, but most importantly: feathers. LOVED the feathers.

I'd probably have to flip a coin to decide which of the wicked sisters I loved more (sorry Glinda, wicked always beats good in fashion). On one hand, I sympathize a lot with Theodora and her style. I'm going through the exact same fashion transition. But then again, how much do I love feathers and sparkles?

Hmm.

Americana: Dick

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But it's true: there's actually a movie called Dick (1999), starring Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst, which isn't Rated X. Funny, huh?

I saw this once when I was fourteen or so and I remember quite enjoying it as one of those silly/girly movies, but I hadn't really thought about it more since then. It wasn't until the Obama-election fever had spread over the Atlantic (mainly via Twitter) that I started thinking about American presidents and their portrayal in movies. I'm quite sure Nixon, JFK, and Lincoln are the most popular, sometimes for serious films and other times for just plain awesome films (Frost/Nixon vs. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). But has any film actually ever mastered combining an American president AND some serious stylishness?

The answer is: yes, Dick.

Vintage Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst, wearing vintage-style clothes in the White House, during the 1970s.

Love. It.

P.S. Bobby was another stylish, politically-charged film, but it wasn't about a president. It was about his brother and he was only a senator. So even though I loved the looks in it, it doesn't really count (Sorry Robert Kennedy. I still love your family).
